The DoSeum Showcases 2025 Artist‑in‑Residence Liza Fishbone
Immersive installation celebrating The DoSeum’s 10th Anniversary opens to the public Nov. 22–Jan. 5
The DoSeum is proud to announce Liza Fishbone as its 2025 Artist-in-Residence. She is a second-generation artist known for creating fantasy murals and immersive installations that spark imagination and wonder. In celebration of The DoSeum’s 10th anniversary, Fishbones’s exhibition titled, “You’re Invited to Birthday Cake Mountain”, centers around the themes of birthdays and captures the spirit of celebration.
Fishbone will transform a 1,500‑square‑foot gallery into a whimsical, interactive world inspired by the joy of birthdays and the wonder of all things birthday cake. The immersive environment invites children and families to wander through a forest of candles, decorate their own birthday cakes and stroll around a radiant sunflower sun.
“I’m thrilled to bring ‘You’re Invited to Birthday Cake Mountain’ to life at The DoSeum as part of its milestone 10th anniversary celebration,” says Fishone. “Birthdays are such a joyful marker of the passage of time. I invite San Antonio’s children and families to step inside this whimsical world and experience the wonder for themselves.”
Liza brings a vibrant vision for immersive art informed by her upbringing in St. Louis, MO, where she spent her childhood playing monkey bars on her parents’ scaffolding while they painted murals as On The Wall Productions (est. 1974) in her hometown. Her earliest job was washing brushes at the St. Louis MUNY Theater, and she fondly remembers believing every household owned a closet full of painting clothes. Through studying fashion design at Syracuse University and the London College of Fashion, Liza began working in three dimensions and has since merged this expertise in large-scale painting with 3D fabrication. In 2014, she founded Sneaky Planet Studios in Austin and quickly became known for bringing magic to spaces through fantasy murals, interactive installations, and whimsical characters.
“As we celebrate The DoSeum’s 10th anniversary, it’s only fitting that our Artist‑in‑Residence, Liza Fishbone, embodies the imagination and joy at the heart of what we do ”says DoSeum Chief Creative Officer Meredith Doby. “Her imaginative vision captures the joy, wonder, and playful spirit that define hands-on learning at The DoSeum and invites families to share a slice of celebration with us as we look toward the next ten years.”
Since 2017, the Artist-in-Residence program has provided children opportunities to directly engage with inspiring artists and the creative process. As part of her residency, the artist will receive a $5,000 honorarium and a $15,000 production budget to realize her vision.
