Mathematical Minds Merge
During the past school year, Saint Mary’s Hall students Helen Trottmann ‘25 and Ephraim Cho ‘24 eagerly approached the middle school math teachers with an idea to start a math competition group, and they brought their ideas to fruition this school year. Once a week during recess time, middle school students are led by upper school students to practice solving challenging math problems. In this setting, the students are encouraged to think outside the box and draw on their problem-solving skills. Many of these problems also introduce new concepts, enriching students’ mathematical knowledge for future courses. The students are currently preparing to compete in the ‘Purple Comet!’ math competition later in April, where students will work as a team to solve the given math problems. Although the time spent together each week is short, the students don’t waste a minute putting their math skills to the test!
