According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas has more dogs than any other state in the U.S. It is estimated that Texas is home to 7.2 million dogs, and there are many thriving businesses here in San Antonio that cater to our furry, four-legged friends.

One of the city’s most successful canine boutiques also happens to be located right here in Alamo Heights. At the “tailend” of 2014, Mike’s Dog Store opened in the Sunset Ridge Shopping Center. The owners, Mike, and Tina Kuykendall, have created a dog lover’s paradise that features everything from designer collars and leashes to specialty dog food and organic dog treats to the most adorable and creative dog toys you can imagine. The store is a riot of colors and textures that will inspire you to empty your wallet for the pleasure of your beloved dog babies, and you’ll want to return again and again to restock your pooch’s favorite things while discovering some that you never knew your dog could not live without.

Mike is a native San Antonionian and attended Churchill High School. Tina hails from California but has called Texas home for many years now. Together, the couple has three children, who are all attending college in various states, and they are proud of their knowledgeable staff, who are well known for their outstanding customer service.

When asked what sets Mike’s Dog Store apart from other pet stores, he will tell you, “We love to get to know our customers and their dogs. Every dog is unique, and we will help you find the right specialty foods and toys that match your dog’s personality and play style.”

Feeding our four-legged friends is very important to their overall health and longevity. Mikes Dog Store carries many different high-quality dog food brands that address specific issues your dog may be dealing with. Whether your dog has food allergies, health issues, or is just plain picky, Mike and his team are sure to have something that will address the issue.

Mike says, “You should feed your dog the very best food that you can afford to keep him or her in the best health possible. We are always looking for the best biologically appropriate dog foods for our customers, and we can help you keep your dog’s weight, skin, teeth, and bodies in great condition.”

During the holiday season, Mike’s Dog Store offers an excellent opportunity for your pup to take pictures with Santa. For a $15 donation, your Fido or Fifi can get sit on Santa’s lap and also make a difference in the lives of other, not-so-fortunate dogs. All proceeds go to Poquita Paws Rescue and to the photography program at Cole High School, which spends the day taking photos and delivering digital prints to participating pooches and their owners.

Our dogs are an important part of our families, and we love to spoil them, even if they don’t know how good they have it. Mike’s Dog Store understands this and works hard to find the most unique, quality pet products out there to stock the store. So, whether you are a fan of the original “Saturday Night Live” era and you think that your pup would appreciate a chew toy in the shape of Mr. Bill, or your little princess paws needs a new tutu for her doggy play date, Mike’s Dog Store has it all.
