Lee Michaels Fine Jewelers A Gem of San Antonio’s Fine Jewelry Experience Opens a Grand Location in 78209 By Bruce X. Forey | Photography by David Teran

In the heart of San Antonio’s lively 78209 zip code, a oncevacant retail space at Alamo Quarry Market has undergone a sparkling transformation. Lee Michaels Fine Jewelers unveiled their third San Antonio location in June 2023, revitalizing a former restaurant location into a premier jewelry shopping destination. The locally family-owned regional jeweler meticulously reimagined the space to mirror the area’s character and better serve its clientele. “We’re always striving to elevate the shopping experience for our customers,” said Ryan Berg, Owner and President at Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry. “The Quarry presented a unique opportunity to create a space with easy access for our patrons in a great area of the city.” The new location is a thoughtful example of interior design, utilizing the retail space’s generous dimensions to full effect. With its high ceilings and tall windows, the store’s layout incorporates these architectural elements into an upscale appeal. A mezzanine level showcases a beautiful conference room, which can also be used for in-store dinners and parties. A hospitality lounge area invites customers to unwind during their visit or attend special events. What remains consistent across all Lee Michaels establishments is their unwavering dedication to exceptional customer service. “It’s the cornerstone of what we do,” emphasizes Victoria Beavers, Vice President of San Antonio. The staff’s extensive training in the jewelry sector ensures every customer interaction is informed and personable. Relationship building is at their core.

new store features a Rolex shop-in-shop in the store that caters to the aficionados of these fine timepieces. Customers will also find an impressive selection of watches from Tudor, IWC, TAG Heuer, and more. At its core, Lee Michaels is a family story, one that began 45 years ago in Baton Rouge, LA. Lee Michael Berg’s vision has blossomed into a second-generation family business, with his children now leading strategy and daily operations. Ryan Berg moved to San Antonio 13 years ago to have an owner and family member in the market. The first Lee Michaels store at North Star Mall was opened in 2000. In 2010, Lee Michaels opened a La Cantera store, which just completed an extensive remodel in time for the holiday season. However, Ryan may now feel a particular affinity for the Quarry location. As a long-time resident of 78209, the store is now part of the community where he and his family are deeply connected. He’s passionate about philanthropic involvement and supports local causes that enrich the culture of our city. Ryan is the current Chair of the Witte Museum Board of Trustees, the immediate past chair of the American Cancer Society for South Texas, and a current board member of Christus Hospital Friends Foundation. “We believe in giving back to the communities where we do business; it’s the foundation of our success,” Ryan said. Recognizing that each piece of jewelry commemorates a unique life event, they maintain a personal touch that transcends the transactional nature of retail.

“We feel it’s very important for our customers to know when they visit our store, they’ll be working with an associate who’s very knowledgeable about the product they’re selling and anxious to form long-term relationships,” said Victoria.

“We’re in the business of celebrating life’s significant moments,” said Ryan. “We accompany our customers on their life’s journey, from marriages and births to anniversaries and promotions. Our commitment to sincere, personalized service sets us apart.”

The Quarry store features a dazzling selection of fine jewelry from renowned brands such as David Yurman, Roberto Coin, Marco Bicego, and Mikimoto among others. It is also the exclusive purveyor of Rolex timepieces in the 78209 area. The

As Lee Michaels Fine Jewelers continues to weave its legacy into San Antonio’s community, its new location at Alamo Quarry Market stands as a shining example of luxury retail, family tradition, and heartfelt celebration of life’s milestones.

Erin Eaton

- MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS -

Erin Eaton The Eaton’s Are All About Coffee, Sweets, and Nice People to Meet By Bruce X. Forey

People from around the world find their way to 78209 and make it a home. Erin Von Borg was born in Canada and spent a few years in Toronto before her father had enough of the cold and snow. He moved his wife, Erin, and her three sisters, to the warmth and sunshine of South Texas. They established roots in Alamo Heights along with fond childhood memories. “I lived on a really fun street, made lots of friends, had a swimming pool in my backyard and had a great time growing up,” she said. While in high school, Erin met her future husband, Tres Eaton, at the Texas Military Institute (TMI) military ball. They stayed close while in college. She attended University of Southern Louisiana. He went to Ole’ Miss. After graduation, they got married. To pursue her passion for baking, Erin opened her first bakery called Princess Pies at age 23 in McAllen, TX. After a move back to San Antonio Tres and Erin opened a new bakery called Eaton Sweets in Castle Hills. As the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens. An unexpected opportunity developed that would position the Eaton’s as the new owners of a well-known coffee establishment in the community. “My lease was up at the Castle Hills store and wanted to relocate. I learned the Olmos Perk was for sale,” Erin said. “Tres said, “don’t do anything on a whim.” But I already had given the deposit.” Erin’s intuition paid off. Olmos Perk grew its brand as a truly unique establishment. A comfortable place to enjoy great coffee beverages, hang out with friends and, of course, partake in Erin’s delicious baked goods. The café evolved to take on the fun personalities of the Eaton’s. The atmosphere is tastefully eclectic. The colorful décor is constantly modified. The comfortable furnishings are often shifted to create new spaces. One constant is the Eaton’s mantra on how to treat customers: people may forget what you say but will never forget how you make them feel.

“I just love what I do. It’s like networking, and it’s a really good sense of community,” Erin said. “You get to know people. We have many regulars. They come in as a customer and they leave as a friend.” “It’s a great meeting place,” Tres added. “We really strive to create a comfortable and happy place to hang out and relax.” Tres and Erin work many hours side by side to make Olmos Perk a success. This joint endeavor has deepened their appreciation for the unique connection they share. “We definitely spend more time together than most married couples,” Erin added. “He puts up with me and we make a great team together.” Walk up to the counter at Olmos Perk over the weekend and you’re likely to be greeted by a young smiling face. The Eaton’s offer part-time jobs to area students, including several from Alamo Heights High School. Many of them enjoyed the experience so much they visit the store when home from college. “A lot of them came to see us for Thanksgiving,” Tres said. “Some came and even worked a few hours. It’s always good to see them and catch up.” Olmos Perk stays connected with 78209 through its catering operations and special events at the store. Away from the business, the Eaton’s enjoy relaxing at their Alamo Heights home with their family of dogs. It’s a chance to reset and appreciate what their neighborhood has to offer. “I can be to a lot of my favorite places in about five minutes. The location is also walkable to a lot of shops and restaurants,” Tres added. While not baking or serving customers with coffee and a smile, you can find the Eaton’s at one of the area’s well-known restaurants or at the Quarry Golf Club for a round of 18. Olmos Perk Coffee is active on social media. Follow the store on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with Erin’s eye-catching and tasty baked creations. DECEMBER 2023 13

BIKE RODEO FOR ALL Y’ALL By Evan Henson, NEISD The Regency Place Elementary School Bike Rodeo is exciting. You can hear groups of students cheering on their classmates. You can see MacArthur High School baseball players offering high fives and fist bumps to Regency Place students. You can also feel the energy as students’ fears turn to confidence as they accomplish feats they didn’t know they could. One more thing you’ll notice: first grader Giovanni. He’s in the Special Education program. But thanks to North East ISD’s Adaptive PE program, he was also able to compete in the Bike Rodeo. All his Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) classmates got to ride a bike today and be just like every other student. “Bike Rodeo is such a big event for elementary students, but sometimes our Special Education students can’t participate because of their physical limitations,” said NEISD Special Education Program Coordinator Christine Rostedt. “But our bikes provide them the opportunity to participate in something huge and be with their general ed peers where all kids want to be.” Thanks to a grant, NEISD has 35 special bikes for Adaptive PE students, equipped with special seats, seatbelts, and an extra set of handlebars in case they need a little help. Giovanni’s favorite feature, though, was the horn on his handlebars shaped like a tiger. He squeaked that thing all over the obstacle course. But more importantly, he finished the obstacle course mainly on his own. “What makes this so special to me personally is that for some of them, this is the first time they have been on a bike,” said Regency Place Special Education Teacher Tasia Puente. “So, it means a lot to me and their parents and especially themselves because they are very proud of themselves and what they are able to do here.”

- LEADERSHIP -

Nurturing Emotional Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence By Angel L. Santiago With insight from Eddie Martinez, Manager of the Trek Bike Shop

“As more and more artificial intelligence is entering the world, more and more emotional intelligence must enter into leadership.” - Amit Ray, Mindfulness Meditation for Corporate Leadership and Management If you’ve checked out any of my previous articles, you know that self-leadership is the key to being a great leader. When it comes to self-leadership, having emotional intelligence (or EQ) is a superpower when it comes to being effective in both personal and professional relationships. The higher your EQ, the better you’ll be at handling tough situations.

In conversation with Eddie Martinez, Manager of the Trek Bike Shop [formerly Bike World] on Broadway, he firmly believes that your success depends on how successful you are with your own EQ. He says, “It sets the tone. You are the leader, and having a healthy relationship with your emotions is imperative. Being able to keep calm during times of stress or uncertainty helps your team feel that they can depend on you.” I couldn’t agree more!

According to HelpGuide.org, EQ is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict. When you can do this well, the people you lead and serve will feel valued, leading to a healthier and more engaged team. It also shows that you’re on their side and helps to build trust and respect between everyone.

When it comes to EQ, there are 5 elements or attributes that define it:

The importance of Emotional Intelligence:

Be real with yourself for a moment. How are you really doing in each of these areas? The better you’re doing, the easier it’ll be for you to connect with others and have good relationships with them. It all begins by connecting with yourself and building a healthy relationship with your own emotions.

• 97% of highly successful individuals measure high in EQ. • According to Forbes, 85% of financial success is due to EQ and 15% to IQ. • EQ in leaders is an effective indicator of talent retention. • High EQ results in effective decision-making and reduced managerial risk.Individuals with high EQ

24

tend to be three times less likely to be involved in a work accident.Team member engagement is highly correlated to EQ, and an engaged team member is 30% more productive than one who is neutral.

78209Magazine.com

• Self-awareness: Knowing thyself. • Self-regulation: Managing negative emotions. • Motivation: Your drive to improve and achieve. • Empathy: Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. • Social skills: Being a ‘people person.’

To build a good relationship with your emotions, it’s important to have tools that you can use to regulate yourself. These tools can help you stay grounded and

calm when feeling intense emotions. “I like to remove myself from the situation - take a pause - so I can process and figure out what kind of action I want to take,” Martinez shared. One of the most powerful tools for regulating your emotions is the breath. Because it has a direct and immediate connection to the nervous system and the brain. Think about it: when you’re in a heightened state, you tighten up and start holding your breath. So when you can take a moment to breathe, maybe go outside or go for a walk, you bring yourself back to a calm, centered state to manage the situation more effectively. One of the simplest and most effective breathing techniques for calming yourself down is the “4-7-8 Breathing.” It’s easy to remember and can quickly help reduce stress and anxiety. Here’s how to do it: • Find a comfortable seated position or lie down if you prefer. • Close your eyes if you feel comfortable doing so. • Take a deep breath in quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.

• Hold your breath for a count of seven. • Exhale completely and audibly through your mouth to a count of eight. • Repeat this cycle (inhale for four, hold for seven, exhale for eight) three more times for a total of four breath cycles. • After completing the four cycles, breathe normally for a few moments and notice how you feel. Incorporating deep breathing exercises into your daily routine or using them during stressful situations can be a valuable tool for emotional regulation and maintaining a sense of calm and balance. Practicing regularly, you’ll find that it’ll become a useful tool for calming yourself down when needed. So, how emotionally intelligent are you, and how can you develop further? Scan below and find out how. Blessings, LifeCoachAngel
