Thunder Valley Ranch Remodel
The core objective for Cary Atkins Interiors, of this primary bathroom remodel was to lighten, brighten, and thoroughly modernize every element of the space. Inspired by the sophisticated, well-traveled lifestyle of the homeowners—who possess a portfolio of three other residences—the Atkins aimed to evoke the refined ambiance and effortless luxury of a world-class boutique hotel retreat.
To transition the room away from its dark, dated, and masculine past, the design introduces a curated palette of soft neutrals, luminous finishes, and sleek, contemporary surfaces. Every detail was meticulously tailored by Atkins to enhance spatial flow, maximize natural light reflection, and integrate high-performance modern materials.
Key elements like the vanity, mirrors, and lighting fixtures were significantly undersized and disproportionate to the scale of the room. Conversely, a massive built-in bathtub surrounded by an expansive dark granite deck monopolized a massive footprint within the bathroom alcove, making the space feel crowded. While the shower featured a window, the overall space felt dark and underwhelming due to dated tile.
The complete transformation began by stripping the outdated bathroom down to the studs and concrete subfloor, preserving only the original stone archway around the tub alcove as a subtle, structural homage to the home’s regional Hill Country aesthetic.
Ann Sacks 24” x 24” Basillio field tiles were selected for the flooring to establish a clean, contemporary foundation. Ann Sacks fluted Terrazzo Renata tiles were utilized on the walls to give the shower a substantial, high-end facelift. The shower sills and floating bench were seamlessly wrapped in the matching field tile to create a unified, cohesive look. Salluto Grigio Micro Mosaic tiles, also by Ann Sacks, were placed on the ceiling and floor of the shower.
Throughout the space, Rohl polished nickel plumbing fixtures featuring industrial cross-handle styling added a refined, tailored element. The primary vanity area features a countertop displaying a full-height backsplash with a rich, soapstone-like appearance. Resting on the counter are concrete sinks by Native Trails, situated above a custom white oak vanity boasting a modern ribbed front. To maximize light reflection and spatial depth, a custom beveled wall mirror sits beneath wall-mounted faucets and elegant Hubbardton Forge Dune sconces, which wash the area in beautiful, balanced light.
In the spacious bathing alcove, a bright white Signature Hardware freestanding tub serves as the room’s uncluttered focal point. Hovering directly above, an Exos multi-light Hubbardton Forge pendant adds visual artistic interest and enhances the ambient lighting scheme. Serving as a striking, graphic backdrop for the tub are custom-made, Taoromino glazed tiles by Marble Systems, featuring an interlocking pattern in charcoal grey, cream, and terracotta.
Envisioned by Designer, Cary Atkins, as a private sanctuary, the primary bathroom now delivers the calm sophistication and comfort of a luxury hotel retreat. Every element was refined to support daily rituals with greater ease, elegance, and a heightened sense of well-being. The clients are thrilled with the result — a spa-like bath that enhances their life through relaxation, refinement, efficiency, and an unmistakably high-end sense of escape.
