Tutor Outreach Program Helps AHJS Students Build Relationships

Tutor ProgramEvery other Friday throughout the school year, a group of Alamo Heights Junior School students carpools to neighboring Lamar Elementary to mentor students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Created by the AHJS Parent Teacher Organization 11 years ago, the Tutor Outreach Program (TOP) has grown into an amazing outlet for students to connect and build relationships across school districts.

Students play math games, read books in English and Spanish and enjoy a strategic game of checkers or chess or perhaps just share in conversations to get to know one another. Students from both schools enjoy the camaraderie, and they learn from each other on a variety of levels.

“Working with younger students through the TOP program allows me to share what I am learning with others in a fun and interactive way. My TOP student buddy and I look forward to spending time together. It does not feel like tutoring, more like learning from each other,” shares TOP volunteer Josie Nash.
